Training
When you contact us, you will speak to our canine behaviourist, Martin Gleadow who will take some details regarding the problem with your dog. He will then arrange to visit you and your dog in your own home. Martin is a trained dog psychologist and will assess various aspects of your dog’s behaviour in order to determine the nature of the problem. If, at any stage, during the initial consultation, Martin feels that he cannot help you, he will say so and you will only pay a small contibution towards his travel time and expenses.
Martin will then walk your dog on a normal lead and collar from the house during which time he will continue to assess the dog. This walk is very important as it will give your dog the experience of calm, assertive pack leadership which will result in the dog understanding its place as a calm submissive pack member.
Having walked the dog alone, Martin will then teach you how to walk your dog properly so that you are walking the dog rather than the dog walking you! The results of this exercise tend to surprise most people. Owners who are normally pulled along by their dog find that they have it walking properly on the lead in a very short period of time.
Martin will then teach you pack leadership skills in all aspects of your dog’s life covering behaviour both in and out of the house, feeding and lifestyle
Pack leadership can be achieved with all breeds and all ages of dog but requires total commitment by the owner. When successfully achieved, it results in a calm submissive dog as a pack member. Lack of pack leadership tends to result in a stressed, insecure, unhappy dog.
The process outlined above normally takes about three hours. Martin likes to do a follow-up appointment after about a month. This normally takes about two hours during which time he will re-assess the dog and discuss progress with the owner. It also gives him the opportunity to reinforce training carried out in the initial session with both dog and owner.
